A warm welcome to all the families that have joined 1st Thirsk Scouts since our last newsletter.
The summer holidays are now within reach, and it is fair to say that in all sections the programme has continued to be action packed!
Our Cubs participated in an amazing 3 day County Camp over the May bank holiday,
our Beavers then quickly followed with their summer camp at the start of June,
and our scout unit has been out on survival camp.
For those of you who follow the group on facebook I am sure you have enjoyed seeing what the groups get up to each week – firefighting, life saving, climbing, badge work, bell boating……..….the list is endless but once again on behalf of the executive committee we would like to say a massive thank you to our sectional leaders, the assistant leaders and to all the regular parent helpers for making this possible.
We would just like to highlight a few changes that we are introducing to the payment of subs. The preferred method of payment of subs is by BAC’s transfer and we would really like to encourage you to use this method (using your child’s name and section as reference) so as of September the newsletters from individual sections will also have the bank details on.
If you wish to pay by cheque please can you ensure that your child’s name and section is written on the back of the cheque. i.e. A. Smith, Cub.
Cash and direct debits will still be accepted however we are charged for the direct debit and so if you do wish to change to a different method of payment then please contact your bank to cancel the order.
Sadly, due to repeated non-payment of fees, we are implementing a new rule by which all subs MUST be paid by the 3rd session of the new term. Failure to pay by this point will mean we are unable to include your child in the sessions, and we will not accept cash for any other scout activity (i.e. such as camp) until Subs have been paid.
Scout Hall Update
For those of you who have been with 1st Thirsk for a few years you will appreciate how much progress has already been made in the scout hall and the grounds. We now have a heating system that works ! By the time term starts in September we are confident that the toilet area will have been refurbished and the building re-wired.
Dates for the Diary
05/08/18 – Thirsk and Sowerby Festival – 1st Thirsk Scouts will have a pitch at the festival. Please come along to say hi and support this event.
11/08/18 – Bucket collection, Thirsk Tesco - Between 10am and 4pm we will be doing a bucket collection for the scout group. We need parents and children (in their uniform) to come along and help us raise money. A sign up sheet will be available in the section meetings within the next week or so. If you are able to give us a hand for some of the day then we would greatly appreciate it.
18/08/18 - Working Day and BBQ – the work at the scout hall carries on and we are looking for volunteers to come and help with tidying/touching up paintwork etc. All materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring food for the BBQ. For more details please speak to one of the sectional leaders.
08/09/18 and 09/09/18 – Tesco Thirsk Bag pack After the success of last years bag pack we have been able to secure a full weekend to bag pack this year. This is a huge fundraising opportunity and so we really need your help with this event. We will be asking for parents and children (in uniform) to sign up for a slot over this weekend. We are asking for beavers to sign up for a 2-hour slot, and Cubs and Scouts 4 hours. Rota’s will be available in sectional meetings so please pledge your support.
Executive Committee News
Many thanks to those of you who attended the AGM earlier in the year. The scout group depends on volunteers and we are always looking for new parents to join the executive and help guide the future of our group. If you have ideas for fundraising or are interested in finding out more about what is involved then please speak to any one of us.
We are currently searching for a chairperson for the committee – if you or any one you know think you might be interested then please do speak to us.
We are so thrilled to see that the numbers in each section continue to grow. Our Beaver section is at capacity, however if you are able to become a regular parent helper then priority will be given to your child.
Finally, I would just like to say thank you for all the support you have provided to the group over this last year, whether it be on the parent Rota, helping at events, being a taxi service or at our fundraising activities.
Have a fun-filled summer!
